Solar water pumps are cost-effective methods and are an ever dependable methodology for providing water in situations where water resources are spread over long distances. It can be used in remote areas too, where the cost of running well -water piping is cost prohibitive or for providing water to an off-grid home. Solar water pumping systems are also used to pump water for domestic animals and crop irrigation.

A photovoltaic solar powered pump system has three parts:

  • Solar panels.
  • The controller.
  • The pump.
The size of the PV-system is directly dependent on the size of the pump, the amount of water that is required (m³/d) and the solar irradiance available. The purpose of the controller is firstly, that it matches the output power that the pump receives with the input power available from the solar panels and secondly, a controller provides a low voltage protection, whereby the system is protected, if the voltage is too low or too high for the operating voltage range of the pump.
Solar water pumps make you to move water from its remote sources to where you use or need it, without any access to power lines. Solar pumping has three primary uses; domestic use for: cooking, drinking and washing, domestic animals watering and crop-irrigation. The same basic equipments are used for all three requirements, although domestic use may require some additional capabilities. Solar water pumps are different from regular alternating current powered pumps in more ways compared to the simple fact that they use Direct Current power instead of Alternating Current.

Solar water pumps are typically divided into two categories: submersible pump and surface pump. A submersible pump is installed under water, usually in a well, but can also be in a pond or stream if raised off the bottom. A surface pump is installed above the water, with an intake hose feeding the pump from the water source, and the output hose feeding the tank. Pumps are able to push water out much higher than they are able to suck water in, so the they need to be close to the water source. Keep the head, or the height difference between the water and the pump,as low as possible.
